The dual-mode interface is the point of this drive: it negotiates four Gen4 lanes or two Gen5 lanes, keeping full bandwidth in thin laptops whose M.2 slot is wired with only two Gen5 lanes. In an ordinary Gen4 desktop board it simply behaves as an x4 drive.
